3.5 starsI think I may have read this during at the wrong time. It's a very heavy book from start to finish. And while reading it there was a lot going on in my personal life, so it was all very hard to digest.
I felt like this could have been split into two books, as there was a lot going on, almost too much for me. You had so many topics and distractions, that I felt like there were a few things that felt unfinished.

Picture Us In The Light Kelly Loy Gilbert Books Reviews
I loved this book! I know you want specifics, and maybe I’ll come back to give those.
It is so rare and thrilling to read a book with a story that pulls you forward and that is also filled with explorations of psyche, soul, spirit, the meaning of life, and the depth and importance of relationships. Kelly is an amazing author who offers all of this. I highly recommend that you join her on her journey.
I love young adult fiction and this book did not disappoint. It's a wonderful look into the complex lives of Asian-American teens as they balance family and school while striving for independence. It's a really well crafted story with more than a few surprises.
A beautiful, nuanced, heart-breaking amazing piece of work that should win EVERY award EVER. Get it now. Seriously. A gorgeous YA book for teens and adults, and should be on every high school reading list. Can you tell I LOVED this book? I DID.
Picture Us in the Light is flawlessly written. It broke my heart and then left me hopeful and sad and grateful for the people in our lives and the sacrifices that they make. This book is challenging and presents problems that don’t have easy solutions, but throughout it all, the characters exhibit grace, even when flawed. A beautiful, transcendent novel!
My son and I both read this book and marked up pages we wanted to discuss. We both loved the book, and used insights, conversations and ideas in the book to talk about personal identity, how we hurt the ones we love, letting go (roots/wings), twists and turns of life and how to deal with them. You really can't ask for anything better from a book that you were entertained, you had a wide range of emotions, and you communicated with someone you love. A definite win in this household.
I bought this simply because I also lived in Cupertino where the book is set, and I work with young teens and adults so the main characters seem familiar.
The story really develops and builds over time, and depicts a wide spanning complex story arc that is way more than I had initially expected, addresses a lot of important themes in an honest way doesn't ever become lecture-ish,
reflects a lot of what really does happen as young adults struggle to find their way and understand their families.
