this book has a series of flaws and I regret that because the premise is nice. The writing is decent but she keeps going over and over the sexual aspects to the point when they become boring.Sexual tension arises from unspoken things possibly even unwritten. Frankly she lost me on the romance aspect of teh book when she wrote 5 whole pages on how gorgegous Jack is. 5 pages. I get it. she is attracted. I get it that the intensity of that attraction is higher than usual possibly even higher than in a regular romance but GEEEE, 5 pages???
since when has repetition because an accepted way of filling pages. If she had just let go of that romance writing and instead told the story she'd still have had enough time to explore.
Is this book sexy? maybe if you have no experience in real life or writing or you are a very straightforward girl, which is good. BUt I like sensuality to build tension and a bit more complexity to the romance.
Overall this is a genre book. It could have been a great genre:urban fantasy because the universe and its premise sound promising instead it is a rather substandard romance. It is a shame because once she gets to telling her action plot and the storyline one can see that she can write.
I wish she had, sigh

Witch Fire Elemental Witches Book 1 Anya Bast 9780425216149 Books Reviews
A lot of paranormal romances fail at finding a balance between intimacy and plot. Witch Fire finds that balance and more. The characters are relatable and quirky. Great start to a series.
The first book of the ELEMENTAL WITCH series proves to be a real opner. This is nicely written with a lot of info on witch theories. The romance is a little formulaic but I probably wouldn't have it another way. The even amounts of perspective expressed by each main character is very satisfying for the reader's point-of-view. This style of writing keeps me going back for more. So now I'm off to the next in the series Witch Blood. Happy reading.
Witch fire is one, witch blood is two. I am going to read all of them. You figure out how it is going to end, but, magical and all fantasy. I enjoyed it, but you have to like magic and witches and romance all together. Mira finds out she is a witch when deadlocks try to kill her.
I agree with the other reviewers that this was just too much, too tied-up, too randomly occurring sex. I did think the story premise was compelling, I did like the characters - both main and supporting, I did like about 85% of the writing style. But the too numerous and too long sex scenes slow down the pacing of the book. I read often in this genre, but I am really debating buying the second book since so many of those reviews say it's more of the same. Too bad, it could have been a really great series.
First off, there definitely could have been a PG or PG-13 version of this book. I'm not sure if that would have been as amusing though...
It does get fairly graphic fairly frequently. They do a lot of fantasizing at first but that doesn't last long. I would classify this as one of those books where their problems/issues could have been halved if they'd had less sex and more talking.
Miri is a waitress with very little family. Her godmother raised her since her parents died when she was very young and there's nothing much exciting about her life. Or at least there wasn't until some strange men try to bust down her apartment door and abduct her hitting her soundly on the head in the process.
They don't actually get to abduct her though because Mr. Gorgeous (her nickname for one of the customers at the diner where she worked) abducts her instead. It turns out that he - Jack - is actually a Fire Witch and he tries to explain to Miri that she is an Air Witch, rare and powerful. Of course Miri doesn't believe him at all even after he lights a flame in his own palm. He does eventually prove it to her but it is sort of a process.
Jack is protecting Miri from being used in a ritualistic circle of elemental witches to call forth a demon. Jack has to explain to her that that was how her parents died, how to use and manage her magick etc.
Of course nothing ever goes as smoothly as it is supposed to which is what makes the story amusing to read. There are some little plotholes and quick coverups but nothing too egregious.
Book 1 of Ms. Bast's 'Elemental Witches" is a solid, reliable paranormal romance. Atmosphere is light, despite some very dark material. Very clever universe created with demons and witches and more. There is plenty of magic to keep things spiced up. The writing is accessible, creating a world that is tangible and easily adopted as reality by the reader and has a nice balance of humor and tension. It isn't too complicated so you won't get lost, but you aren't going to have to work to hard to figure out what is going to happen next either. It is somewhat predictable.
The lead characters are sexy and intriguing. Frankly, Jack is one of the best male leads I've read for a while and was the best part of this book. The plot is just interesting enough to make this into more than just about the couple. The supporting characters that appeared were colorful enough that I look forward to reading their stories.
The mythology created here is great- multi-layered and plenty of room to grow through a series. Ms. Bast hasn't reinvented the wheel here, but has blended just enough innovative ideas into some basic paranormal concepts to create a nice new world. I'm not jumping out of my skin waiting to read the next book, but I will enjoy it when I do get to it. I'll save it for that rainy afternoon when I need a little edgy comfort.
Bottom line satisfying read and a sigh of relief that I have another series to rely on for that paranormal romance fix.
You'll like this if you like
Similar series might be the 'Spellbound' series by Sydney Somers Don't Let Go (Spellbound)
or even Kelley Armstrong's 'Otherworld' series, which bounces between witches, werewolves and demons Bitten A Novel (The Otherworld)
