Twenty-year-old Wylie Cypher from Hope’s Crossing, New Jersey is a natural-born champion if you followed his life all the way from his childhood to the person he is by the end of this book. He was a gifted and virtuous guy who kept it at first base with his girlfriend Judy during the early days of their courtship. Of course there was touching and feeling but no contact between their privates. It made this book remain true to the stereotypes of the time period it’s set in (though this book had just been released most recently). From the beginning, Wylie goes off to college but discovered he has no sense of direction while there. This led to his father planting the “military” idea into his brain to help give direction to his life to which he agreed to. Wylie went through the basics: training, orientation, and foreign language education in order to grant him “valuable future benefits as well as a good stead and insulation from combat.” The rest of the novel involves his time in South Korea, where he and his good friend Scott McIlvane battle the enemy alongside each other and mainly with Wylie and his special position as U.S. Army Combat Correspondent, a position that he earned because of his skills in the world of journalism and typing.

If there was a military novel that was a page-turner, this would be it for me. It’s got the elements of a comedy with action and romance. I had initially felt that it would be hard to get through as there will probably be references to graphic violence since it was a military read but no it was a breeze to get through. The way the author wrote it brings to mind a cross between the French novel Candide with that of the comedic 1970’s film, MASH. Wylie goes and reports the goings-on of his military life and befriends a group of interesting people throughout the novel. Public Information will make you laugh, cry, sigh, and open your eyes to the realities of war torn Korea post-World War II.

I advise you if you are not into military-themed novels to give this one a chance. It is one that softens the military experience for you. Don’t let its serious front cover scare you away because it did that for me at first but when I was into the fourth chapter, I was no silly-willy but was anxious to find out what happens next and so forth. Take it from me, you will be entertained by this book. If not, then I don’t know what is wrong with you. Haha.

Public Information Coming of Age During the Korean War edition by Rolf Margenau Susan Haake Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews

Public Information Coming of Age During the Korean War is a riveting novel following reluctant Army recruit Wylie Cypher as he climbs the ranks and makes a name for himself working for the Press division in the military. Filled with colorful characters and humorous happenings, with a dash of danger thrown in, Rolf C Margenau tells this coming of age story in a unique way, as Wylie remains relatable regardless of the reader's knowledge of the military or the Korean War. The narrative is well-paced and exciting, keeping readers glued to the pages until the end. If you enjoy coming of age stories, following along as a boy discovers the hard truths of life and love, you will enjoy this novel.
War stories aren't something I'm usually drawn to, but reading a story that captivates me right from the off means I'm sure to finish it.The writing in here is very well done, and infused with such humanity and empathy that it was truly expressive. This is my first foray into Margenau's books, but if the rest are as good as this one I'll surely be back for more!

Great writing, and impressively detailed characters in a genre where that isn't always the case.
Loved it!
Public Information Coming of age during the Korean War by Rolf Margenau is a complicated mix of personal memoir and novel.
We follow Wylie, who as a very young man was sent off to fight in the Korean War and Margenau chronicles Wylie's time there through this expansive book. Inspired by his wife having kept 300 letters that Rolf wrote to her in anticipation of their getting married, Margenau has captured the angst and terror of Wylie's experience while at war. Wylie was essentially a public relations officer for the military, but still had his share of interesting experiences. The plot was conveyed well enough, even though the narrative tended to lag in places. Overall, the author has captured his experience quite well, with a good blend of humorous and sad recollections that balance out the story. For lovers of historical fiction, this is an invaluable addition to the genre that covers the Korean War.
With Public Information, Rolf Margenau has written a coming of age story with a difference. Finding yourself after failing out of college is bad enough, but having to do so in the midst of conflict thousands of miles from home, must feel impossible. This is the situation Wylie Cypher finds himself in. To get his life back on track, he enlists, and finds himself unexpectedly on a tour of Korea during the war. As an adept marksman he expects to find himself in the thick of the action as part of an infantry unit, but instead he finds himself essentially as a reporter. Although he isn't on the front line of the war effort, he encounters many lively characters, experiences heartache, and has many stories to tell, which he writes in letters to his girlfriend.

Telling the story of the Korean war through Wylie's eyes as a reporter for the army, was really unique and made for a interesting narrative. I enjoyed the plot and took to Wylie as a protagonist, feeling empathetic with his highs and lows. Public Information, is certainly a book I would recommend.
Public Information is not only a great read, it is also a great tribute to the veterans of a war that is often forgotten. Furthermore, in light of today's political strife in North Korea, it felt really poignant to me, reading a novel about all of those men and women, who fought for the freedom and democracy in South Korea. The respect the author – who himself is a veteran of the Korean War – has for these people is evident in his honest writing. He doesn't shy away from the harsh combat scenes, and the loss experienced, but also brings light to the story, with laugh out loud moments, and the development of strong bonds between soldiers. Rolf Margenau has written something really wonderful, and I hope that he will write more about his combat experiences in the future; turning his own stories into marvelous pieces of fiction.
