Piper Lynn Hightower Books Reviews

I should have read this during the day. Once I started I couldn't stop which sucks for me because not only did it creep me (it takes a lot to accomplish this), I'll be sleeping with the lights on. For readers who love reading bone-chilling thrillers with paranormal elements that make the hairs on your neck stand up, look no farther as "The Piper" does not disappoint. The author successfully delivers a well-written story that captures the reader's attention and imagination; watching it unfold like a movie so clear and vivid in their head - a movie that you won't soon forget. This is a definite must-read. Don't miss out. If you scare easily, I suggest you don't read this late at night.
I didn't dislike it enough to put it down because it was brain candy and I didn't have anything else on hand at the moment, but I wasn't impressed. The main character was pretty flat, and when she was flat bitchy, the majority of the time there wasn't much discernible motivation behind it. Everyone seemed to just take her crap as the norm and she didn't do anything to make up for her attitude, so why create tension without resolution? The homicide cop, now he was a great character, and I not only liked how he didn't take her ish, there was also a background story as to why she was giving him the ish she was giving him. I also liked the woo-woo stuff, which is why I picked up the book and why I kept reading. Her close friend did a better job of keeping me interested in the search for answers than the protagonist did.

The other thing I didn't care for was all the extraneous detail. It's one thing to bring the reader into the scene by adding noises such as the staccato walk of an abrasive woman in heels, or the condition of the food in a pot on a stove because the writer is showing you, hey, this kitchen was abandoned in the middle of dinner and they left the burner on - what could have possibly happened? But to describe every little detail in the dining room of a very average restaurant, just so one could visualize the panoramic scene, was tedious and boring. Such moments (so very many of them) drastically took away from the pace of the story, and the book could have been chopped down by a third without all of that. I'd rather have a really good short read than a book that fits the average length of the genre due to filler.

Lots of people love this book and I salute that, it's just not my cup of tea. Thought I'd share my thoughts for those who may also not be into this particular kind of tea. Or cup. Whatever, you know what I mean.
I just finished "The Piper" by Lynn Hightower, which simply blew me away. I've known Hightower as a Shamus-Award-winning mystery writer, so I didn't look into what I was buying at all. I started the Audible book, and was quickly introduced to Olivia James, a pragmatic Southern woman living in Los Angeles. She receives a strange phone call from her brother who assures her everything is all right, that he "has paid the piper." The thing is, her brother has been dead for nine weeks.

I don't buy scary horror stories like this or those by Stephen King. Truth is, I get scared. When I was a kid, I saw a movie called "Thirteen Ghosts," and it haunted me for weeks. Best leave that stuff alone.

Still, I felt compelled to go on with "The Piper." Olivia has lost her job, gone through a divorce, and is about to move back to her childhood home in Tennessee with her eight-year-old daughter. Olivia has inherited the house from her brother.

For me, alarms immediately sounded. Don't go into that house where your brother died! Olivia, though, is a Southern steel magnolia, an agnostic of the paranormal. There has to be logical reasons behind the weird stuff that starts happening.

I listened in the car, as I walked the dogs, as I worked out, and even as I lay in the dark in bed just when I really shouldn't be listening. I had to find out what happened. The reader, Xe Sands, voices each character, male and female, masterfully. The experience is akin to a listening to a great story around a campfire. Things in the story get worse and worse, yet you have to know what happens next. There isn't a wasted sentence. Olivia James is a strong character in an overwhelming situation.

The story goes to amazing places--and it is truly frightening. I don't think I can read another like this for a while. Yet I'm deeply satisfied. Now my only worry is can I find another audio book as great as this one?
nothing at all like her other books - TOO WEIRD - go back to her old characters. they were good
I read the reviews and made the purchase. It was highly rated. I will put the time in during the holidays as it has small print.
What a ride of a story! I wish I could read it again. Recently divorced mom, Olivia, and her daughter, Teddy, are restarting their lives in Olivia's childhood home. Olivia receives a call from her brother who died nine days ago in the house where she is now sleeping. At this point in the story Teddy and her dog seem to be frightened by some thing that Olivia can not or will not see. As Olivia was pushed beyond her sensibilities so was I. Cancel your appointments and read this book. I need company in the death chute.
Lynn Hightower's latest novel THE PIPER is a must-read for fans of thrillers and supernatural stories. All the classic elements are here phone calls from the dead, a malicious unseen presence, a haunted house and much more. The devoted mother Olivia and her young daughter Teddy are beautifully portrayed. The pace never lags. This is a page-turner that will keep you reading right up to the exciting and very satisfying finish.
